PSAT 8/9 - Digging In (@ Marquette-Alger RESA)

Event Date/Time:
Wednesday, March 6, 2019 - 10:00am - 3:30pm
Suggested Audience:

This spring, the PSAT 8/9 will replace the ELA and Math portions of the M-STEP assessment in 8th grade. (Students will still take M-STEP Science and Social Studies).

This significant shift in curriculum, instruction and logistical considerations will require administrators and staff to become familiar with the College Board suite of assessments - as soon as possible. Don't worry! We're here to help with the process!

MASSP's new, one-day workshop:

  • Provides a brief overview of the state assessments for 2018-19 grades K-11 with discussion around the purpose for various types of assessments
  • Familiarizes staff with the PSAT 8/9 assessment
  • Assists with planning for curriculum and instructional shifts
  • Introduces the College Board reporting portal
  • Provides information that can be shared with parents and students about a PSAT 8/9 night

This is a great PD opportunity, with all the usual things you've come to expect from MASSP.

Participants will:

  • Have access to the slidedeck to replicate what we do with your staff.
  • Receive all of the new handouts we've created to complete activities with students, staff and parents.
  • Leave the session feeling confident that you can lead this work with your school community.

This workshop is most beneficial to schools that send a team inclusive of a principal and counselor, as well as a teacher of 8th grade ELA, Math and possibly special education co-teacher.

Administrators and Teachers who have attended this workshop have stated...

"I didn't know there were such big changes in assessment for 2018-19. We need to go back and talk about the optional interim benchmark assessments and this switch to PSAT 8/9...there is a lot to think about in terms of testing time and how we use our results."

"I am glad I was able to see so many test items. It allowed me to think about how I can integrate the test taking skills students will need on the PSAT 8/9 into my curriculum and assignments."

"The level of rigor is significantly higher than what students have encountered on MSTEP. We will need to prepare kids for a higher level of text complexity and work on close reading...and its timed so fluency is an issue."

"I left the workshop with everything I need to provide a great day of PD with my staff. MASSP also created materials for a parent night which I plan to do next year."

"The workshop made me think more about the 'why' of testing and the importance of sharing the why with teachers, students and parents."

Both MASSP and the College Board are in the field offering workshops to prepare schools for this transition. We've created a side-by-side graphic that explains these two training opportunities, as well as who the target audience is for each session to assist you with your planning.
