MASSP Submits Testimony on House DPS Bills

MASSP recently submitted written testimony to the House Appropriations Committee on the package of legislation they are currently considering regarding Detroit Public Schools. In developing our testimony, MASSP reached out to our members in the city of Detroit to make sure that we were accurately reflecting the challenges and concerns they face in their buildings. As you will see, we have focused on the issues that affect students and the impact that the proposed changes would have on instruction at the building level.

State Board Open for Public Comment on LGBTQ Statement, Guidance

On Tuesday, the State Board of Education launched for public comment a draft "Statement and Guidance on Safe and Supportive Learning Environments for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning (LGBTQ) Students." The SBE document would provide school districts with recommendations, though not requirements, on how to improve environments for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning students.

MDE Memo Outlines Ed Eval Funding Distribution

On March 10, the Michigan Department of Education released a long-awaited memo outlining the process for obtaining educator evaluation training dollars. The bottom line is that the funds are being awarded as grants to ISDs and then distributed to local districts. To draw down dollars, ISDs must submit spending plans – which require the approval of their member districts – outlining how the money will be allocated and spent. In addition, the MDE FAQ makes it clear that districts may receive a retroactive reimbursement for training conducted on or after July 1, 2015.

As our loyal Twitter followers know, I am a big fan of the Teaching Channel website. I frequently Tweet videos from their site with best practice instruction as well as blog posts. The content they curate and post is truly outstanding. Their repository of videos of classroom instruction is a wealth of information in terms of best practice teaching strategies K-12 and in most subjects.
