'Untie my Hands': A Principal's Plea

Here's a commentary from the NASSP Executive Director, Gerry Tirrozi that recently appeared in Education Week. It's a great synopsis of the work we do. After reading it, I found myself saying, "Amen!" Here it is in case you haven't seen it yet.

Three Minute Classroom Walk Through Training

Carolyn Downey's book The Three Minute Classroom Walk-Through: changing School Supervisory Practice One Teacher at a Time provided a strong foundation to getting into classrooms more frequently, separate from the traditional classroom observation.

Our group recommends that you start with the end of the book, last two chapters, then return to the beginning. Philosophically, the original order of the book is all right, but practically speaking the end cleared some things up enabling us to practice what was being suggested with greater ease.

Tough standards, added duties give more West Michigan principals $100,000-a-year salaries
Posted by Dave Murray | The Grand Rapids Press May 31, 2009 04:40AM

A Press survey of public salary information shows 176 administrators and educators across West Michigan earned $100,000 or more last year, just over three times as many as five years ago, when there were 58.

Four superintendents — two from Kent County and two from Ottawa — climbed above the $200,000 mark, up from one five years ago.

This time around, many of the jobs crossing the six-figure threshold belong to principals. While four topped the mark five years ago, now 32 high school principals earn more than $100,000, along with 14 elementary and middle school principals.

They are younger than their predecessors, have less experience in the classroom and are, most often, responsible for far fewer students. But their salaries are higher and they have greater freedom over hiring and budgets, handling a host of responsibilities formerly shouldered by their supervisors.

Among the most striking transformations of New York’s public school system since Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg took charge in 2002 is that of the role of principal, once the province of middle-aged teachers promoted through the ranks, now often filled by young graduates of top colleges.
