Response due Friday; 40 schools changing

Detroit Public Schools is requiring 2,600 employees -- about one out of every five districtwide -- to reapply for positions just six weeks before the school year is set to begin.

DPS declared the positions at 40 school buildings vacant on Tuesday and said staff had until the end of the week to respond.

The schools -- many of which also are to get new principals -- are being reconstituted because of failure to meet state annual yearly progress standards for several years.

In recent years, there has been heightened awareness of the importance of early childhood education and high school as intervention points in the educational lives of America's children. Less attention, it seems, has been paid to the importance of the upper elementary grades and middle school and the role they must play in the preparation of students for life after high school. The new ACT report The Forgotten Middle suggests that, in the current educational environment, there is a critical defining point for students in the college and career readiness process—one so important that, if students are not on target for college and career readiness by the time they reach this point, the impact may be nearly irreversible.

'Overwhelming' Response to Film Package

'OVERWHELMING' RESPONSE TO FILM PACKAGE
Film and television producers have already sent in 80 scripts for review for production in Michigan, and Jan Lockwood, director of the Michigan Film Office, said Tuesday that her office is being overwhelmed with calls from executives in Los Angeles, New York, London and Canada.
The activity actually started just before Governor Jennifer Granholm signed the film package on Monday but Ms. Lockwood said it is more than just getting scripts and taking phone calls.

America's Forgotten Middle-Skill Jobs
