The State Superintendent’s memo regarding the use of power standards you received in the past few days is the result of a lot of work by MASSP. The memo vindicates what we’ve been saying to you ever since the passage of the MMC -- there is a lot more flexibility in the standards than believed.

MASSP put considerable effort into getting this memo written to your advantage, the building principal. I hope you will now put it to your use.

Colleagues:

Michigan educators, along with educators from several other states, have been challenged in recent months to implement some of the highest high school graduation requirements in the nation. These standards are tied to credits aligned with a nationally vetted set of content expectations. Although this is a fitting challenge for our times, this transition from course titles and seat time to credit tied to content expectations has introduced a new way of thinking about how to develop, align, and deliver the Michigan Merit Curriculum.

Hope you've listened to one or more of our Back to School podcasts.
I'm feeling that we've done a real service for our members with them. I just finished listening to the one we did with Sally Vaughn, Chief Academic Office/Association Supt. for MDE. Yes, I wish I was a better interviewer, but the "what's the one thing you want a principal to know" questions give great direction to you as a school administrator.
