Career and Technical Education

I am looking for a HS within approximately 1 hour radius of Jackson County that has been using common-pacing and common assessments for at least a few years in ELA 9 & 10.

I am specifically looking for a place to send my team to see that this is common practice and the norm in effective schools, as well as have Q & A among teachers related to lesson planning, instructional techniques, collaborations, and basically all-things PLC. Please contact me if you would be willing to host about 4 of my teachers for a 1/2 day session this Spring. The sooner the better.

Does anybody have procedures on cell phone use during a lockdown drill? We heard that some districts are collecting student cell phones as part of the procedure. Does anyone do that and what success/failure have you had?

Looking for ISD or regional agreements on specifics related to certificate of completion. If you know of any resources or contacts to point me towards, I would appreciate it.

I am hearing lots of reports in my ISD about alternative high schools either scaling way back or closing completely, some at mid-year. The reasons given are almost always related to concerns about AYP (low MME scores and grad rates)or to the budget. Is this the case in your part of the state?

Hello, everyone. Lapeer East HS has 63 copies of Chris Tovani's "Do I Really Have to Teach Reading? Content Comprehension Grades 6-12." These books are in great shape,softcover, and 120 pages. The publish date is 2004. This is a great staff development book--easy to read and put to use.

We paid $16 per book but you can have them for far less.

We would like to target at-risk students with a low commitment mentor program intending to reduce drop-out, failure and attendance rates. I am thinking that phone calls home when a student misses school, the normal good morning greetings, and such. I am looking for any suggestions.

Students took the 3 WorkKeys components needed to qualify for a National Career Readiness Certificate as part of the MME. The results of those tests are now available. OEAA has provided schools with a 6 page PDF of instructions telling students how to log in and register so that they can receive a copy of their certificate, but we would like to send a cover letter to students and parents along with that PDF. Does anyone have a copy of such a letter that they would be willing to share?

Jackson County is currently exploring solutions to provide on-line or integrated student assistance in core curriculum areas.

The parameters for the solutions we are exploring are:

a. meet the MMC on-line requirement
b. be engaging for the student
c. allow for credit recovery
d. allow for tutorial preparation / catch-up
e. allow for "first time" option for receiving credit
f. be cost-effective for a countywide purchase
g. be compatible with all operating systems
h. meet Michigan Merit Curriculum standards

My questions are:

1. Does your district currently have a solution in place to address these needs? (If done as an ISD/RESD/RESA or other regional entity please indicate in your response.)

2. If so, what solution(s) are you using?

I am looking for career centers who utilize online registration and are willing to share their methods and tools.

We are currently looking at the way our discipline system is being implemented and is it really working? Are detentions and suspensions changing behavior? Just wanted opinions on positive behavior supports, in-school suspension, etc. What is working for you? Thanks for your input and assistance.

We are looking at online options for high school courses and credit recovery options. We are looking at Aventa and Michigan Virtual University. MVU has had some issues in the past. Does anyone have a recommendation or insight (positive or negative) on these or other online options?

I looking for a job description of a person on the high school or middle school staff that collects, disaggregates or aggregates, then gives or presents that data to Administration, teachers, school board, etc.

Saginaw Valley State University holds the site licence to host the Teacher Cadet training for the South Carolina Teached Cadet curriculum.  We are interested in starting a program and I am looking for other districts that might be interested in the training at SVSU.  They would like around 28 participants to host a training.  Please let me know if you are interested in the Teacher Cadet Training Program.

Dear CTE Leader:

On April 23, 2008 the Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals will be hosting a very special event at the State Capitol in Lansing. Our goal is to impress upon our state legislators not only the importance of Career and Technical Education, but how Career and Technical Education can be the best avenue for some students to meet the increased academic requirements of the Michigan Merit Curriculum.

We are exploring a vocational type program for some of the students at our Area School.  These are students up to 26 years old.  We are looking at some type of program to expose them to our occupational programs and provide them some transition services as well.  Your feedback is appreciated.

We are considering having our local school counselors enroll students directly into an online or other electronic enrollment system for CTE and am looking for suggestions.

Has anyone dealt with the legality of having a student, who is in possession of school property, to show you their private Myspace page to track who/where they sent the school property to? Our admin team is split on this issue. The issues are: Are items sent over the Internet public domain? Is the “public” part of Myspace public domain and the “private” section not?
