Rep. Joel SHELTROWN (D-West Branch) is introducing legislation that would create a dual diploma system for students who don't fit the mold for going on to college.

The legislation will add another option for students to graduate from high school in addition to the current Michigan Merit Curriculum requirements.

"This option would allow a student to choose a more relevant diploma that emphasizes career-oriented courses," Sheltrown said.

Under the measure, which has yet to receive a bill number, in order to receive the alternate diploma a student would be required to complete the following:

- At least three credits of math, including algebra I and geometry or their integrated equivalents;

- At least four credits of English;

- At least two credits of science;

- At least two credits of social science;

- At least one credit of health and physical education;

- At least three credits in a career and technical preparation sequence, and;

- At least one additional credit flexible credit aligned with guidelines developed by the Department of Education.
