ESSA Feedback Forums's picture

Beginning at Wayne RESA on November 29 and continuing at locations around the state through the month of December, the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) will be holding a series of forums across Michigan to gather input from educators, advocates, parents, students, and the public regarding specific proposed components of the nation’s new federal education law: the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).

ESSA replaces the former federal education law, commonly referenced as No Child Left Behind (NCLB). ESSA offers new flexibility to states and opportunities for Michigan. This is the second round of public comment and MDE has not yet released details on their proposed plan, but Principals can anticipate that Michigan's ESSA plan will touch on:

  • State assessment, including a proposal to make PSAT 8/9 Michigan's 8th grade ELA and math assessment;
  • School accountability measures, including a replacement for the current color-coded school report card;
  • A rethinking of existing systems and structures regarding supports for students and schools; and
  • Teacher and leader training and evaluations.

The feedback gathered at these forums and through online surveys will inform Michigan’s final ESSA plan, which will guide how Michigan leverages federal funding to make Michigan a Top 10 education state in the next 10 years. The final ESSA plan will be submitted to the U.S. Department of Education in early March 2017.

In addition to the information that will be presented at these forums, any interested individual can learn more at the ESSA web page (
