Get Your Building Secretaries the Support They Need!

Let’s face it…building secretaries and administrative assistants are key people in every school. Many of them get very little training and support and are largely expected to learn on the job. MASSP is partnering with Michigan Association of Superintendent’s & Administrators (MASA) to host Elevate: Executive & Administrative Assistant's Conference – a fantastic two-day event in East Lansing offering a wide array of topics to support the work of secretaries who work in buildings, as well as at the district and ISD level.

We recognize it may be a challenge to lose your frontline staff for two days, so we have divided the event into an optional pre-conference on November 1 and the keynote and conference sessions on November 2. This allows more flexibility and customization to meet the needs of individual attendees.

Day 1: Pre-Conference
We are offering two tracks – one focused on technology and the second on key HR functions that fall under the responsibilities of many administrative assistants. The goal of each of the technology sessions are to provide shortcuts, tips and tricks to save time and increase efficiency. The HR track workshops are being facilitated by veteran HR Director Carol Baaki Diglio, who recently retired from Novi Schools. Carol is a systems thinker and will be sharing a wealth of information in terms of establishing procedures and practices to ensure proper administration of various programs.

Day 2: Conference
The conference day is a jam packed opportunity to learn, including two keynotes. One of the more concerning trends in our society is the increase in incidents of human trafficking. You may think “not in our community,” but law enforcement tells us that it is occurring literally everywhere, and it is essential that we raise the awareness of staff to know what to be watching for to protect our students. This is the focus of our first keynote. In many cases, Administrative Assistants are the “eyes and ears” of the building as they come in contact with many students, parents and community members. Participants will learn the important lookfors. The second keynote is a legal update focused on the key topics that school employees need to be aware of. We also have a myriad of breakout sessions scheduled to meet the needs of any level of assistant.
