Hello from Mackinac Island!  Welcome to the MASSP Summer Retreat!

F1 Visa Student

Does anyone here accept F1 Visa Students and what is your policy if you do? If you don't why not?

Students Smelling Like Marijuana

What do you do with students who come to school smelling like marijuana and do not have possession of it, and no proof that have been the actual user?

Sample Student Cell Phone Policy

I am interested in reviewing the policies other districts have established in regards to student cell phones (particularly during the school day).

Sample Letter

I need a sample letter to send home for seniors that won't be walking at graduation because they are off track with credits. We have never sent one home before and have relied on verbal notice but last year this was an issue.

Drug Testing?

We are trying to get some input on drug testing within schools. Have any of you been down this road? Any suggestions/insight you can share would be greatly appreciated.

Saturday School?

Does anyone currently have what you would call a successfully ran Saturday School option for discipline? If so, any details on how it is ran would be great. We are contemplating on some pros and cons to starting one and wanted some feedback. Thanks.

ACT Explore

We are contemplating the use of EXPLORE for our 9th graders. Have any of you used it? Is it appropriate? Is the data gained useful?

On-Line Foreign Language

Has anyone been looking at offering foreign language on-line? If so, what programs are you using?

How many of you are running the 2nd & 3rd days of the MME with school in session?

For the first three years I have been able to run the MME with only Jrs. in the building. This year on day 2 & 3 I will be having regular school in session while testing. Late start was not granted. I would like to know how many of you are running regular school days while testing day 2 & 3. Thanks

Has your alternative high school been directly affected this year due to either “AYP” or school budget concerns? If so, how?

I am hearing lots of reports in my ISD about alternative high schools either scaling way back or closing completely, some at mid-year. The reasons given are almost always related to concerns about AYP (low MME scores and grad rates)or to the budget. Is this the case in your part of the state?

Sample Letter?

Would anyone be willing to share a sample letter to seniors not eligible to graduate based on their current academic progress? I need to shake a few out of senioritis.

Pay to Participate for Athletics

Who is using the pay to participate system for athletics and what do you charge. Guidelines, etc...

Thanks
Paul

Is your attendance policy effective? Why?

Please share your effective attendance policy. Also, take the time to tell us why your policy is effective.

Does your school have an open campus for lunch?

Please respond if you have an open campus policy for lunch. Interested in a summary of your current policy.

High School Dance Rules -

Hello,
Does anyone have any policies in place to address the dancing "styles", dress code, and behavior? At Fraser, we are looking to establish a norms for the dances including a "2 wristband" rule which addresses inappropriate dancing. Meaning, violate the rule and we take one wristband away. Violate the dancing rule again and we take the second one away and you have to go home.

Any ideas on what has worked at your school would be greatly appreciated.

Fraser High School

Does anyone want to meet at the Conference to talk about alternative education issues?

Kind of late to suggest this, but...

I will be at the conference in Mount Pleasant on October 4th, 5th and 6th. Is anyone interested in meeting there as a group (or individually) to discuss alternative education issues? If so, please email me and we can arrange to meet.

Ken Willison, Alternative Education Liaison to MASSP;
President of Michigan Alternative Education Organization (MAEO)

How did your alternative high school fare with the EdYes Report Card / AYP?

I just left a discussion amongst alternative high school principals in my area where we compared and discussed our “Michigan School Report Card” results. This leads me to ask the following questions. (Please note: My answers are in parantheses.)

How long has your alternative school been in operation? (We are in our 25th year.)

What was your grade? (We received a No Grade because we have so few Full Academic Year - FAY - students that even using the maximum 3 year average, we did not test 30 FAY students.)

Did you make AYP? (No.)

If not, what tripped you up this year? (While we barely hit the target in Math, our ELA score was too low.)

What phase are you in? (1)

Traditional 6/7 Hour Day and Advanced Placement

Hello,

We, at Manchester High School, are on a traditional 7 hour day and are looking to see if we can get more time for our students to work on their Advanced Placement courses, particulary English Literature and Calculus.

I was wondering if anyone on a 6 or 7 hour day double schedules their AP courses? Or anything different/innovative to get those students more time in AP?

Thanks.

Who among us has alternative education responsibilities or interests?

Please help MASSP's new alternative education liaison, Ken Willison, gain a clearer understanding of who among us has alternative education responsibilities or interests. If you have any duties in your district related to alternative education ... or if you just have a strong interest in alternative education issues ... please let Ken know who you are. If you prefer not to post to the internet, please feel free to send an email to him at ken.willison@staff.spartaschools.org

Also, if you haven't done so already … why not join the new Alternative Education group? While not much has been posted there yet, we hope to get the ball rolling soon and would love to have all interested parties participate.

Thanks.

Can anyone recommend resources or counsel on starting a staff to student mentor program?

We would like to target at-risk students with a low commitment mentor program intending to reduce drop-out, failure and attendance rates. I am thinking that phone calls home when a student misses school, the normal good morning greetings, and such. I am looking for any suggestions.
