There has been a heavy investment in our state in early childhood programs and elementary literacy. The third grade reading legislation has caused many districts to revisit their instructional practice around literacy. Clearly students who are struggling readers in elementary come to middle and high school lacking the necessary fundamental reading skills needed to be successful students. Let's talk about what we are seeing in secondary classrooms in terms of literacy and what work still needs to be done.

This Week's Questions: (one posted each day)

  • Q1 (Monday): If you had to put a # on it, what percentage of your student population would you identify as "struggling readers"? #masspchat
  • Q2 (Tuesday): Do you feel your teaching staff is fully aware of the # of struggling readers & that they are prepared to remediate? #masspchat
  • Q3 (Wednesday): What supports do you have in place for your struggling readers? #masspchat
  • Q4 (Thursday): What resources/supports/PD does your staff need to adequately assist struggling readers? #masspchat
  • Q5 (Friday): If you could do anything to support those who struggle to read in your building what would it be? #masspchat
