Mich. court: PAC cash can't be deducted from check

LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan Court of Appeals has ruled teachers can't have political donations deducted from their paychecks.

The 2-1 decision released Friday reverses an Ingham County judge who had allowed the deductions if a political action committee or labor union paid the school district's extra expenses in advance.

The appeals court says state law prohibits the use of government funds or other resources to make political contributions.

The Michigan Education Association is reviewing the ruling.

Various unions, business groups and Republican lawmakers had filed briefs with the court arguing for and against allowing the PAC deductions.
