Michigan Patriot Week
Senate Resolution No. 168 designates September 11-17, 2012, as Michigan Patriot Week, which symbolically begins on September 11 and concludes on September 17, Constitution Day. Michigan’s citizens, schools and other educational institutions, government agencies, municipalities, and nonprofit, religious, labor, community, and business organizations are urged to recognize and participate in Patriot Week by honoring and celebrating so that all may offer the reverence that is due to our free republic.

As schools it is important to acknowledge and remember the events of September 11th and the sacrifices made by members of the police, fire departments and armed forces. Over the years I’ve attended many high school events where Patriot Week is being celebrated. It is common to see a moment of silence during the school day on Sept.11 and at sporting events held close to the date (click here for a script). Schools have also invited their local police, fire and armed services members to their football games during the week of Sept.11th to be acknowledged by the crowd (this may also include vehicle displays). It may also be appropriate to invite graduates who are in the armed forces to be “special guests” at various school events during Patriot Week.
