Showcase Your Great CTE Program!

Dear CTE Leader:

On April 23, 2008 the Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals will be hosting a very special event at the State Capitol in Lansing. Our goal is to impress upon our state legislators not only the importance of Career and Technical Education, but how Career and Technical Education can be the best avenue for some students to meet the increased academic requirements of the Michigan Merit Curriculum.

The purpose of this event is to showcase some of our CTE programs. We want to be able to show, explain and demonstrate to our legislators that academic content is inherent within CTE and that their recognition of this will go a long way in promoting the granting of academic credit towards graduation. We want the legislators to see what students are learning in these classes, and how the classes are teaching students not only technical skills, but the academic skills as well.

There is an enormous number of programs throughout the state that qualify for this opportunity. In order to choose just ten, we need any interested programs to complete the online application at http://tinyurl.com/2j7843 and return it to us by February 8, 2008. We will notify the ten schools who will be invited to the capitol by February 29, 2008.

We hope to receive an application back from your school’s programs, and if selected, the students in the program (a group of 4 or 5), the CTE teacher, the CTE director, and the high school principal will be invited to join us in April. We would also like to invite any
television station or newspaper the school has to come and cover the event. These students will have a chance to work alongside the media that will be covering the event, as well as talk to legislators throughout the day.

This event will take place all day on Wednesday, April 23, 2008. We would like students to be setup and ready to go by 8:30AM, and the day will come to a close at 3PM when students can begin to take down their displays.

Please contact us with any questions you may have about the application process or the event itself.
