This Week in Politics in 5 Sentences (or Fewer)

With the Supreme Court ruling to uphold the Affordable Care Act and summer election season going full tilt, this week’s big education news got swallowed by other issues. Despite that, MME results released this week show continued improvement statewide in students’ performance on the exam. The Michigan Department of Education focused its message on the overall improvement while Education Trust Midwest put out a press release pointing out that the achievement gaps grew between white students and African American, Latino, and economically disadvantaged students. These results could garner more attention during the summer campaign season and they are certain to be the focus of discussion and debate when the legislature returns to session in September, but for now attention seems to be focused elsewhere.
