Welcome Region 7 Members to Southwest Michigan's online secondary administrator forum; a place to collaborate, discuss, share and gather ideas, resources, and support! I trust each of you is having a safe and rewarding school year.

In an effort to meet MASSP members, strengthen connections and engagement, and represent the voices of Region 7 Principals, I am making an effort to attend ISD/RESA principal meetings to provide some MASSP updates, answer questions and solicit feedback on behalf of the association.

If you have specific questions, suggestions or concerns that you would like me to attend, please be in contact.

Any middle schools using Second Step: A Violence Prevention curriculum?

We are considering a K-8 implementation of the Second Step violence prevention curriculum, and I would like to talk to a few schools who are using it about results, ease of use, etc. If you are familiar with Second Step and would be willing to chat about it, please send your contact information to herzingm@pennfield.net

How many principals felt the MEAP Social Studies test was a waste of time and money?

I know this may be the last year of the 9th grade Social Studies MEAP. Explore for all should take care of that. When are we going to stop assessing students on a one day/one test model?

Is anyone using Facebook to officially advertise events in your school?

If so, has anyone created guidelines for this type of activity? Who has approval? Who gives approval? Does the associated email have to be through the school? etc.

Does anyone have suggestions for rewards/incentives for High School students?

Just can't seem to reach one of our students...home life involves a lot of yelling and discipline. We'd like to try the opposite route for positive behavior.

Does anyone remember the "old" graduation requirements from the 80"s? We had them.

I am getting tired of hearing that Michigan did not have any requirements before the new Michigan Merit Curriculum. There was a time that schools received $30 per student K-12 for having the State Graduation requirements. These requirements included Consumer Economics as a Social Studies requirement. I believe most schools requirements before the MMC were based on the $30 incentive. Bill Scaletta

Independent Study

Does anyone in their high school have teachers that do independent studies for students? If so, what guidelines do you use to comply with state requirements?

What are your expectations/requirements for students taking online classes?

I am looking for anyone who can share some information with me regarding expectations or requirements you have at your district with students taking online classes. Do you do credit/no credit only or is there a grade involved? Does it count towards weekly eligibility for athletes? Is there a penalty beyond loss of credit or poor grade if they fail the class since it is an extra out of pocket expense for the district?

Does anyone have a "Freshmen Academy" within their 9-12 building?

We are considering teaming our freshmen class into 4 different groups by using a math, science or social studies team or math, science or language arts team. Does anyone do this now. Posted Nov. 29, 2007
